On Saturday evening Sept 5th, 2015, DVCC made its first ever appearance at the Cool Breeze Evening Invitational in Chino, CA. The race featured a flat and fast 3-mile course. The meet provided an early-season test for DVCC, allowing it to compete in multiple races against programs from all over Southern California
The Thunder was the lone Arizona High School Cross Country program to compete in the event and delivered solid performances in both of its races.
In the Junior Varsity Race, the DVCC JV squad got things off to a great start by charging to a first-place finish out of 27 teams.
Senior Anthony Ramirez won the race with a PR of 15:59; it was also his first ever win as a Thunder runner. He was followed to the tape by Sophomores Reece Donihi in 3rd (16:27) and Nick Thatcher in 5th (16:30). Juniors Solomon Hanson in 7th (16:39) and Leo Crowder in 9th (16:42) completed the scoring. Sophomores J Iannone 15th (16:56) and David Neighbors 53rd (17:49) also turned in impressive performances.
In the Seeded Varsity Race (the premier event of the meet), the DVCC Varsity took 4-place finish out of an 18-team field.
Captain DJ Harris (Sr) took 4th-place overall with a PR of 15:00. He was followed into the chutes by fellow Captain Matt Anciaux (Sr) who took 28th (15:45) and Chris D'Angelo (Jr) in 30th (15:46). Habtamu Cheney (So) in 49th (16:03) and Nick Walrod (Jr) in 58th (16:10) completed the scoring, with each running a PR. Also placing were Nathan Chan (Sr) 89th (16:33) and newcomer Aksel Laudon (So) 95th (16:36).
